Meeting: 02.25.09

Posted on February 28, 2009

Our latest meeting was held on 02.25.09 at Barley Brothers, well actually the banquet room at Shugrues!

Our second M.A.L.T.S. meeting is now in the books and I wanted to let you know that, once again, I had a great time with all of you! It is always a blast when we can get together and talk about our favorite subject, "BEER!", and enjoy the mind altering symptoms that it causes.

Thanks to Jaime and Jules for taking notes. I have a legible copy of what we talked about. Another atta boy to Lon for the hospitality and great beer! I will now bring us up to speed on the notes I have from the meeting:

Terry (a/k/a T-Bone) supplied us with a half-gallon of his IPA. Rich T. detected a bit of a burnt wood taste on the backend. Most agreed with the taste and all agreed that it was well done and very drinkable. T-Bone stated that the beer was 6-7 weeks old and another round of dry hopping may be in order. Thank you Terry for your contribution.

Greg W. supplied a growler of Monkey's Uncle Red Ale. Rich commented that the finish was nice and dry. Tea Bag and Lee commented that they were disappointed with the lack of hoppiness for a "Greg beer" and I do have to say that I concur. Lon commented that it was balanced but had a slight metallic aftertaste probably due to the local water used for the brewing. Once again, I agree.

Lon supplied his Destroyer Imperial IPA and the Belgian Double Wit. Whenever Lon breaks out the Destroyer things get a little bit fuzzy, for obvious reasons. I remembered the oohs and ahhs and everyone enjoying our host's offerings. Great job once again to Lon.

Plans are to grow our club to 20-25 members who we can enjoy the nectar of our labor with. If any of you know good people who are interested in brewing, please forward this email to them in hopes of new recruits.

Christian (a/k/a Tea Bag) sorry Christian it is just so much fun calling you that, agreed to head up the shirt and glass committee. Big round of applause to him for this undertaking. We talked about having a shirt, large glass, and a taster glass included in the dues for our members.

Lon brought up a good point about having our logo reflect the club's ethos. I agree and Jordan L. is going to due some artistic work in that endeavor.

We all agreed that we will put a cap of $50.00 on our annual dues. If we can do it for less, we will. Jules had a good idea to put the remainder of dues collected toward a family BBQ or get together. Excellent!

Our members agreed that our club should attend the Barley's Brewfest 3 in Henderson, Nevada on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Lon agreed to talk to his connect up there to see about blocking a group of rooms for us. We will also find out if we will be allowed to serve some of our homebrew at the event. In any case we will help Lon and his crew out with BB's activities.

Lon said that we might be able to work a deal out where we sell our shirts, glasses, etc. at BB's.

Jaime W. was nominated as the Treasurer for our club. Jules was nominated as Secretary. A big thanks to both of these troopers!

If any of you have ideas for our logo or can put something on paper, please get it to me or Tea Bag. We would like to have a working prototype by next meeting.

We agreed that the next meeting should be on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. I will get back with you about the next meeting location.

Lon commented that he would like to get a "guest tap" situated in BB's for a M.A.L.T.S. recipe. I love this idea and would like to start working on a mutually agreed upon style of beer for this. It would entail all of us being available for a day to help Lon out with brewing the product. We can make that happen and get some media attention at the same time. Rich commented that we could collectively come up with a recipe for possibly American Pale Ale or perhaps a California Common "Steam" beer. Both great ideas and beers that would compliment Lon's offerings at BB's.

Lee D. brought in pictures of the brewing sculptures that are in the works. Let's get those done so our fellow brew brothers can get brewing.

One thing that I forgot to mention at the meeting was that I got in a shipment of 11 pounds of Cascade Hop Pellets last week. If any of you would like to purchase some, please let me know. I got what I think was a pretty good deal on them and will pass that on to you at my cost of $18.00 per pound.

Take care all of my fellow brewers and beer lovers,

Greg Wales
