Meeting: 04.24.09

Posted on April 29, 2009

Here's the notes from our latest meeting which was held at the home of Lee and Suzie Dockins.

Brew Crew,

Here we go again! If you missed the M.A.L.T.S. Meeting this time... you missed a heck of a good time and some tasty BEER!

Thanks goes out to Lee and Susie Dockins for hosting the party and making up some very fine chili. It seems as though beer and chili seem to compliment each other and does wonders for the gastrointestinal system. 'Nuf said!

We had two new friends join us at the meeting. We welcomed Merv and Heather Hersam (hope I spelled that correctly) to our meeting. It was great to see you there and we enjoyed your company and feedback about our favorite subject... BEER!

This was the last meeting that Jan S. will be attending until his migration back here in the fall.

The first order of business was the upcoming Barley's Brewfest 6 being held this Saturday, May 2, 2009 in Henderson, Nevada. We discussed our logo (big thanks to Susan Weber Designs) and our banner. We have ordered a 8' X 4' banner to hang on our tent (or Easy Up) with the logo prominently displayed. The banner will be in tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28th.

Rich and Greg are in the process of building a "jockey box" to serve our beers this weekend at BB6. Rich is providing us with 5 gallons of "Black Betty" IPA, Lee has come forth with (it better be 5 gallons) of Belgian single-and-a-half and Greg is up with 5 liters of Monkey's Uncle Red Ale. Lee will supply the co2 manifold and Greg will take up a 5 lb. tank of co2 to dispense.

Christian brought over three shirts with our logo on them and made by Printing Plus. We agreed that the size of the logos on the front and back needed to be bigger (insert size joke here) and bolder. We agreed that we will represent M.A.L.T.S. with a "natural" color T-shirt with a screen printed ink that will be included for our dues paying members. Christian also brought over a nice Polo shirt with the logo embroidered on it. We will encourage as many members as possible to "come out of pocket" for a nice shirt.

I stopped by Printing Plus today and discussed having our logo made larger on the shirts and ordered 24 shirts. It looks like they will be ready the end of this week so we will have them available for BB6. We should have a few extra to sell at the event as well.

Rich is heading up the glass mug w/ logo on it department. Lee and Susie had some beer mugs from Kmart that bore a striking resemblance to the one on our logo. Rich will be getting samples for us to look at by our next meeting. Our dues paying members will receive a mug as well.

Now to the fun part of the meeting - BEER TASTING!!!!!!

Greg supplied a growler each of Chocolate Monkey North English Brown (try saying that after a few pints) and Monkey's Uncle Red Ale. Some of the comments about the brown were "smooth, mellow, light and carbonated just right" The red went over with "good flavor, really decent, hoppy but well balanced". For some unknown reason, Lee then shot a hand gesture in the general direction of Christian just for giggles.

Rich came forth to the altar of Ninkasi with smooth nectar of the gods "Black Betty IPA". A hit as usual from the brewery of Reposado! Some of the comments were "Ram Jam" and Jules called it "SSSWEEEEEET". Rich felt it was a bit bitter from the Carafa and would adjust the amount of that and pump up the CaraPils a bit for mouth-feel. Nice job as usual Rich... and not a hint of, dare I say, cheese. (Editor's note: "That's musty oxidized cheese..."

Lee had a keg-orator full of Belgian/German Hefeweitzen and the American cousin wheatbier. Jaime and Terry enjoyed the European Hef while everyone else pretty much gagged it down. It is an acquired taste! The American wheat went over well and was lauded as a very good "green" beer. Lee then went to the well and broke out two goblets of his Belgian single-and-a-half "Dirty White Boy Belgian". This pretty much took the place of our dearly departed "Destroyer" and saw Jan S. having an intimate encounter with Lee and Susie's screen door! I only wish that I had video of that. We had a "few" laughs and thanks to Jan for being a good sport. Thanks to Jaime for two fisting the Dirty White Boy Belgian and bogarting it so no one else could get any!

Stuff was getting a bit fuzzy by this time and we discussed someone going on M.A.L.T.S. Probation for a serious party foul. I guess this one will have to be overlooked since there is no credible witness or testimony as to what the foul was. Be waned though... no more party fouls will be tolerated lest you find yourself on M.A.L.T.S. Probation.

Lee broke out an Ipod version of "Black Betty" and we danced the night away. I personally think the Bee Gees would have been better. Oh well next time we have the meeting at our house I will break it out with our disco ball.

Our next (official) meeting will be held On June 12th, 2009, at a location to be determined. Probably either Barley Brother's or Christian and Jules.

I look forward to seeing you all soon and may the power of BEER be with all of you,

Greg Wales

Proud M.A.L.T.S. Member

P.S. do we have any volunteers to come up and bail us out in Vegas this weekend?
