Barley's Brewfest 2009
Posted on May 7, 2009Hello to the Brew Crew, I just wanted to drop you all a line and let you know how Barley's Brewfest 6 went this past weekend in Henderson, Nevada. M.A.L.T.S. was well represented with Rich, Mary, Christian, Lee, Susie, Jaime and Greg in attendance. We arrived at noon and set up in about 1 hour. M.A.L.T.S. was the first tent as you arrived at the event and walked in from the parking lot. We were situated next to S.N.A.F.U. (Southern Nevada Ale Fermenters Union) and shared two side-by-side tents. They were a great group of fellas who had some tasty beer on tap. Very accommodating and good to be around. I have to say that Susan Weber did a great job fixing our banner for the event (it is a long story that will be best told at the next meeting. Needless to say, we did not have anyone asking why saguaro cacti grow on the sun). We set up M.A.L.T.S. beers from Lee, Rich and Greg plus we had two additional beers that were provided from Barley Brother's. A last minute change in plans had BBs "subbing" M.A.L.T.S. in to serve their nectar of the gods. The venue was a courtyard next to Barley's Casino and a nice one at that! There were about 25 tents set up that had everything from Budweiser to some really funky tasting black cherry beer/cough syrup mixture. None of us had a cough that night. The event got started at 2:00 p.m. and saw a smattering of folks ambling by. We seemed to be a hit early on followed by 15 minutes lulls and 15 minute spurts. We had good feedback on M.A.L.T.S. and BB's beer and very good comments from a couple of writers from different beer publications. As the day wore on... Rich, Christian and Susie were "manning" the taps and Jaime and I decided to go "Congo-ing". The DJ was pretty good and had the crowd moving pretty well. Of course, we had a bit of "Freebird" from Skynard playing in our tent which definitely helped the mood of our guests and customers. Rock on and kudos to Christian for bringing the boom-box. As luck would have it, we ran out of beer just as the band was winding down and when we really started selling the cigars! We did well selling cigars and shirts and will have a full treasurer's report at the next meeting. We "tore down" at 8:00 p.m. and retreated to the nearest TGIF for a bite and a pint. All of us agreed that the event went well and that we prepared well. We were missing a few "small" items and will put them on the list for the next event. We planned on having a "second wind" after dinner but it never happened! We were all exhausted. It seems as though working one of these events is a bit tougher than any of us expected. In closing, I would like to say that M.A.L.T.S. put on a great show and I am very proud to be associated with you all and Barley Brother's! Check the LH Daily News Herald this week for a story and picture(s). Thanks to Mary T. for that! We Rocked and the Beer World took Notice! As always... I can't wait until the next meeting and seeing all of your smiling faces slowly melt away as the night draws on. Greg Wales
